PSAT and Pre-ACT

PSAT and Pre-ACT

While the testing policies of colleges and universities are changing, in that many schools are “test optional” and no longer require the submission of standardized test scores, there are still a number of schools that do. In addition, some colleges and universities may require the submission of standardized test scores for the student to be admitted to an honors college, honors program or to be considered for a merit-based scholarship. That being said, it is recommended that you consider taking a standardized test for the possibility that you are interested in any of the above.

The scores submitted to a college or university would be from either the SAT or ACT,

and the PSAT and Pre-ACT are tests you take first, in order to help you decide which

one would be better for you to take. While the SAT and ACT have similarities, they are

different enough that students generally prefer one over the other. Taking these tests in

10th grade will help get you started in making that decision.

The PSAT is administered in October and the Pre-ACT is administered in January.

Registration takes place in school and you will be notified of the registration dates.

If you would like to review the list of “test optional” colleges and universities, please use the College Resources tab on the department menu and click on www.fair test.org

Please Note: The PSAT is the test used to determine National Merit Scholars, however,

only scores received in 11th grade are used for this purpose. If you would like to be

considered for the National Merit Scholars program, you must take the PSAT in 11th

grade, as well.
