7th grade language selection
Dear Sixth Grade Parents:
The language your child chooses will significantly shape their academic journey over their Middle and High School careers. Language learning is a sequential process, and the skills built in middle school will be crucial for high school success. It's significant that your child is passionate about their chosen language. Please review the following information to help you and your child select a world language course.
In seventh grade, students can enroll in French I-1, Italian I-1, Mandarin I-1, or Spanish I-1. They will continue with level I-2 in eighth grade and take the FLACS/NYSAWLA Checkpoint A exam. The averages of their grades in seventh and eighth grade (Level I-1 and I-2) will appear on their high school transcripts as one high school credit. To fulfill Manhasset High School's graduation requirements, all students must complete language studies through Level III and pass the FLACS/NYSAWLA Checkpoint B Examination. At the end of the language sequence, AP© (Advanced Placement) college-level courses are offered in all languages.
For native French, Spanish, Italian, or Mandarin speakers wishing to study at a higher level, we offer placement interviews and written assessments. We encourage you to schedule an appointment by the end of this school year to discuss this option.
